Upper Market Safety Project Construction May Update: Rainbow Honor Walk, MUNI Railing Installation, Median Repair/Uplighting: Casey Hildreth

18 May 2022 4:15 PM | Robert Bush (Administrator)

Rainbow Honor Walk plaques (mostly) installed, construction to intensify soon at 16th/Noe

Our contractor has completed the relocation of 7 existing Rainbow Honor Walk plaques on Market Street and installed most of the new plaques committed to by this project. The remaining few plaques will be completed with the new bulbout locations at 16th/Noe, which we finally started to build this week (or should start any day). These bulbouts, along with a switchover to the new traffic signal poles/layout (and new dedicated left-turn arrow for westbound 16th Street left-turns onto Market Street) will be completed before Pride. (Bulbout work at 15th/Sanchez will be on hold until after the Pride weekend).

Muni custom decorative railing installation to begin May 31

The project team will begin installation of custom decorative railings at all Muni boarding islands along Upper Market after the Labor Day weekend. This will require temporarily closing each stop for approximately one week during construction. Existing shelters along the corridor have been temporarily removed and will be put back once work is completed.

Work will begin at the Jane Warner Plaza terminus and move eastward toward Octavia. Work will pause during the Pride weekend so that all stops are operational. Signs will be posted during the temporary closures to alert transit riders and provide wayfinding to the nearest available stop.

Median repair/uplighting, additional work near Octavia

Bay Area Lightworks, the electrical sub-contractor, is completing all work in the center medians (trench restoration, final fixture installation) for the uplighting and traffic signal modifications in the coming weeks. A supply chain issue remains for the uplighting conduit, unfortunately, so there is not yet a timetable for this new streetscape feature to go 'live." (We will certainly keep you posted when we find out more).

At the eastern end of the project, a new traffic signal for Hermann/Laguna (as part of the Laguna/Guerrero/Market intersection) will be turned on soon, which will allow new dedicated left-turn signals off of Market Street to become operational as well. Sewer and water relocation work will also begin at McCoppin Street, as part of changes to the eastbound bike lane approach to Octavia/Central Freeway.

Please feel free to reach out to Casey Hildreth or Alex Murillo at Public Works if you have any questions or concerns. For the most up-to-date construction information please visit www.sfpublicworks.org/uppermarket
