President's Message

By Peter Albert, DTNA President

The July meeting was SRO. Certainly, issues like Trader Joe's/ Cafe Flore and the CPMC Office Building plans will draw a crowd/ but having the project representatives and Supervisor Bevan Dufty at the meeting to hear neighborhood comments and answer questions kept the meeting productive and helped shape outcomes that we should all be proud of:

CPMC is reviewing the concerns about design of the new office building that were raised. In addition, DTNA's task force will look over the results of the recent neighborhood survey and the one conducted a few years back to give CPMC direction and feedback. CPMC representatives will make a new presentaton at DTNA's Sept 13th meeting.

The Planning Commission meeting on Cafe Flore was delayed until September 23 (reflecting the DTNA-voted position), giving Noe and Beaver neighbors time to work out better understandings with the Cafe Flore owners. We hope to present the latest agreements between the two (concerning hours of operation/ liquor license/ entertainment changes/ outdoor tables/ etc.) and to vote as a neighborhood on a position that will be presented to the Planning Commission before the Sept 23 hearing.

Trader Joe's has heard an earful from DTNA. While I have no news of a continuing interest on the proposed store at 15th and Sanchez/ we certainly have Supervisor Dufty's attention. Do remember that Trader Joe's has no plans per se on file with the City. Their purpose in meeting with DTNA was to air this idea before they took it to the next level. I appreciate getting the opportunity to give them feedback so early in their process.

Neighbors have requested presentations from the Police Department on Crime and Safety, as violence in and near our neighborhood has escalated. I hope to have a representative from Northern or Park Stations to review how the Police Department is addressing the rise in violent crimes at the next meeting.

I also hope we can cover other updates at this, meeting, such as the progress on the Safeway Perimeter project, the undergrounding of utilities/ the development pro- posed near Boynton Court/ and Halloween planning.

I will also exercise my authority as President to make some sorely-needed appointments to the Board/ to Board committees, and some office appointments of existing members. Anyone interested in expressing interest to be nominated for the 2005 DTNA Board elections should attend the next meeting or call for more information.
