Utility Undergrounding Update

The following is information regarding two of the Utility Undergrounding Projects in Duboce Triangle.

First, the ongoing Undergrounding project in Duboce Triangle, called "Potomac and Waller," continues. One house remains to be connected, and once that house is connected, the utilities can begin removing the poles and wires along (1) Waller Street between Divisidero and Steiner, (2) Potomac, and (3) Pierce Street south of Waller.

Second, the Duboce and Church project is set to commence in the first quarter of 2005. That project would underground utili- ty wires along Duboce Street (from Alpine Terrace to Church) and Church Street (from Market to Hermann). Beginning one of these projects involves significant design work and contacting residents, so the poles would not come down right away.

If you visit the DPW Undergrounding website, you can view the Undergrounding map plan. You can signup, under "Friends of Undergrounding/" to be informed of when the City will begin the process of choosing which streets to underground in the future. DPW highly recommends that everyone interested sign up and then show up once a meeting time and place has been chosen, as the squeaky neighborhoods will get more attention. In the past, streets that had 66% of the residents petition for Undergrounding jumped ahead on the list.

Instead of email, you could mail your name, address, and phone number, and a note saying you are interested to: Friends of Undergrounding, 875 Stevenson Street, Room 460, San Francisco, CA 94103 The next Undergrounding meeting is May 4th at 9am. Anyone is welcome to attend at the address above. The Carmelita streetlights (shown at left) are known as Acorn or Post-Top lights. They are the lights that DTNA hopes can replace the near-ubiquitous Cobrahead lights currently used in most of the neighborhood.
