Secretary's Report - January Meeting

Secretary's Report of the January 2004 DTNA Public Meeting

By Edd Dundas, DTNA Board

Safeway intends to find another agency to do recycling at the corner of Market and Duboce. DTNA will update any changes in future newsletter.

Church-14th St-Market intersection has new countdown pedestrian signals that help both walkers and drivers judge when to safely cross. To increase traffic calming at this busy corner, DTNA will contact Liz Lerma of the Dept. of Public Works and consult with the Dept. of Parking and Traffic.

Undergrounding (conduit for carrying electric, phone, and cable TV) is reported to be in place on Beaver and Henry Streets. Two DTNA neighbors have volunteered to work with President Peter Albert to encourage the utilities companies to move overhead lines from poles to underground.

Harvey Milk Recreation Center renovation plans and models are on display in the lobby of the Center.

Roundabout at Scott and Waller Streets has been tested by the City and has been criticized by many people who live near it and have to use it. Peter Albert will invite the project supervisor to report on the future of the test at an upcoming meeting.

Davies CPMC Hospital retrofit planning is still in flux. Some construction will likely begin at Davies later this year. A staff member said there may be plans to empha- size the neurosciences at Davies in the long-term changes at CPMC's three campuses.

Board elections were held. The new roster of DTNA Board of Directors stands as follows:

Officers: Peter Albert, President; Jennifer Winn, Vice President; Mark Banta/Treasurer; Edd Dundas, Secretary; David Paisley, Newsletter Editor; Tim Weeg, Distribution Manager; Ben Gardiner, Webmaster.

Directors: Mark Scheuer, Ruth Frost, Jahan Raissi, Peter Cohen, Gregg Wilcox. (Update: Unfortunately for us, Gregg Wilcox lives just outside the boundaries, which our bylaws state precludes him from serving on the Board. At the next meeting, DTNA President Peter Albert plans to appoint to the Board Katherine Keon, a Triangle resident and past Board member.)

Bevan Dufty spoke of progress in the Castro Renaissance. Street trees will be added, and newsracks will be organized and upgraded. A shoe store and a fish market are expected to open soon.

Homeless young adults have had no real organized shelter service in the Upper Market area since the facilities at 2500 Market closed. Supervisor Dufty with SF social service agencies are negotiating with the owners of the Perramont Hotel to lease one of the three floors at this SRO licensed residential facility to house qualified youth.
