The New Duboce Park Bulletin Board

By Ned York, DTNA Board

While I was walking the other day from the outbound Muni platform toward the Harvey Milk Center, I stopped to watch a neighbor who was reading the announcements posted on the newly installed Duboce Park bulletin board. What I saw was more than just a man finding out information about happenings in our community; instead, what I observed was something that I believe was of greater significance. I suddenly realized that the bulletin board is now our new community landmark enabling us to communicate easily with one another. It has become the means by which we are able to strengthen the bonds between one resident and another living in our neighborhood. In this way, the bulletin board is a new tool for creating and enhancing the sense of community in the Triangle.

If you haven't yet seen the bulletin board, I urge you to visit Duboce Park and have a look. Undoubtedly, it is quickly becoming the focal point for the dissemination of community information including news about the Duboce Triangle Neighborhood Association and notices concerning Friends of Duboce Park.

The bulletin board's location -- in the center of Duboce Park -- reinforces the fact that the park is really the heart and soul of our neighborhood. Since its dedication on September 9,1900, and its subsequent construction at a cost of $4,798.56, Duboce Park has helped shape our collective identity as a community for over one hundred years. With the addition of the new bulletin board, Duboce Park has become an even more special place to the residents of the Triangle.

The installation of the bulletin board came about as a result of the Friends of Duboce Park working in collaboration with the Department of Recreation and Parks. Special recognition must go to Mark Scheuer & Carol Maxwell of Friends of Duboce Park and Dan McKenna of the Department of Recreation and Parks for their persistence in making this project happen.
