Halloween Debate Update

By Edd Dundas, DTNA Board

The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously on June 10 on a resolution for District 8's Bevan Dufty to make the Halloween onslaught an official city event and attempt to curb the violence and public drunkenness at this annual street party that has no party permit, the Bay Area Reporter stated.

DTNA neighbors were invited in our last newsletter to respond to the Halloween chaos. Representative statements include

"My experience relating to the increasingly unruly Halloween crowds has been much the same as everyone else in the neighborhood and I plan on actually leaving my apartment next year and renting a hotel room someplace else for the night! A pathetic alternative, but anyplace would be better than the riot act of last year."

"By far the worst problem for us now on 16th street (near Castro) is the necessity to protect our property from Halloween revelers who feel it is acceptable behavior to defecate and urinate under our stairs or in entry alcoves or passageways between our homes. It is disgusting and a real public health hazard."

"People complain that they can't get to the toilet facilities supplied by the city, they are not enough, the doors couldn't be opened because of the crush of the crowd." How long would this be tolerated in Presidio Heights or Sea Cliff? "0ur (gardens) are not portapotties and our streets not urinals. Our neighborhood is not some Halloween theme park where it is permissible to drink and use drugs publicly under the cover of a crowd that clearly overwhelms the police presence."
