Page Street is the site of a pilot traffic calming project that will create a better bike route between Golden Gate Park and Market Street. Eleven locations are proposed for the removal of stops signs and installation of mini-traffic circles. The project is funded by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, to reduce motor vehicle air pollutants and improve San Francisco Bike Route 30. In many other cities, including Portland, Seattle, and several Bay Area cities, traffic circles have also been shown to reduce collisions, speeding and cut-through traffic.
The Page Street Traffic Circle Project will build five temporary circles early next month in order to test the design and allow residents to observe how the circles will function. The locations of the tests will be Page at Clayton, Ashbury, Lyon and Scott and also at Waller and Steiner. These locations will be installed for a month, and then residents within one block of any of the 11 proposed locations will vote on whether to install permanent circles. A final public hearing will be held and then permanent construction will proceed at locations where residents approve circles. DPT is soliciting resident support for watering and up-keep of the landscaping in any permanent circles that are approved. The City will initially landscape the circles, but will need community buy-in to maintain their appearance.
